I dragged my kids out of bed @ 5 AM two weeks ago on a Saturday and waiting in line for 3 hours for the H1NI vaccine. When it was finally our turn I wanted to take my kids and run out of there!! But instead I just turned my head and cringed while the two of them got poked. The good news is that neither one of them have dropped over dead yet.
I am torn too. I don't know if it's good news, but my kids already had the swine flu so we don't have to worry about that one. And every year we get the flu shot it's happened to be the day before Thanksgiving and my kids are throwing up EVERY thanksgiving. Ever since Aaron and all his problems I'm so iffy about shots. Long story maybe I need to email you if you really want my opinion. Is this long enough....
We've all had our flu shots, but I still don't know about Alice and H1N1. Macy is just getting over it. My doctor thinks it's a good idea, but understands my reservations too, which doesn't help. I wish he would just tell me what to do!
ummmm I'm not going to have my kids get either of those right now for obvious reasons...but I will tell you this: one of the nurses I work with said the majority of doctors that she has talked to said YES to the flu shot but NO to H1N1 for children for now, just because it's so new.
My doctor said the same thing; yes to the flu shot, no to the H1N1 shot. He said we are better off getting the regular flu shot and making sure they are being as sanitary as possible(as much as a three year can be). If they can keep from getting the regular flu virus, the chances are better that they won't get the other. The other thing is your boys aren't in school or daycare, so that takes away a lot of the worry of catching it.
My doctor has the vaccine in her office right now. She is one of those doctors that doesn't vaccinate unless she feels really strongly about the benefits. I trust her. However, I still don't think we are going to get it. If I was pregnant or if we had a baby in the house, I might reconsider. I just don't feel like we are "at-risk" candidates.
Yes to the flu shot. We don't have H1N1 vaccines yet, but I would probably get that, too. All the doctors I've talked to recommend it. And a vaccine has to go through so much testing before it can ever be available to the public. That vaccine has been tested more than the seasonal flu shot (since that changes every year).
jackson's going to get both when he is 6mos (dec). unless my dr changes his mind by then. when we went in for his 4 month, dr said he would recommend getting both, but said he would have more information by dec. on the h1n1. unless something changes - im sure we'll be getting both.
ok holly, here is my two cents...if you care. first off, i hate vaccines. i am a nervous wreck each time i go in, but do vaccinate. i did regular flu vaccine for the whole family. my sister-in-law's team of oncologists (her two year old was diagnosed with leukemia in feb.) spent a lot of time evaluating the H1N1 vaccine for their cancer patients and found it to be safe and vaccinated her whole family. i don't have my kids in day care (i even stopped putting them in at the gym), but they do go to the grocery store with me, music class and they go to nursery (sometimes- i am even kind of holding out on that one until sick season is over). once totally opposed to the H1N1 vaccine, i am kind of considering it now. if i could actually get a hold of it. everyone has an opinion on vaccines and that is mine. good luck!
I haven't decided yet, the mercury in the shots bothers me. Both the flu shot and H1N1 have mercury, unless you can get ahold of the "single-dose", which does not. I'm trying to find that right now, if I do, I will definitely get it for my kids.
You've got enough comments on here but I'm going to leave one anyway. Healthy people age 2 and up can get the flu mist which is Themerizol free (the preservative that has mercury in it). The H1N1 shot has themerizol which has the same mercury content of a can of tuna. (not a lot) And lastly- H1N1 is part of the A strand of flu which we get in the seasonal flu vaccine like every other year. So if you've never had an adverse reaction to the regular flu vaccine you should be fine with the H1N1. I usually only get the flu vaccine if I'm pregnant and I only get it for the kids when they are real little and vulnerable. But mostly do what you're comfortable with- you're the mom do what you want!
Yes to the Flu Shot, No to the shot for H1N1. Why yes? My oldest son has had a flu shot 6 out of the last 8 years. On the two years he didn't get the flu shot, he got influenza. The first time he got influenza, he was lethargic and incredibly ill. The second time he was sick enough to miss a week of school. Why no? We've already had the swine flu here and, as bad as it was, I have to say that I am not comfortable vacinating my children with something that is so new on the market and has had been researched so little. There you have it.
Holly - I did it.!. Not sure what punctuation to use! I am having this baby in three weeks and have heard enough horror stories about swine flu, like ligit ones from my friend that is a PA for an OB and that kind of made up my mind for me - in my situation I felt like the vaccine was better than the risk of not having it. Scotty got it too - but I am so not clear if he needs a second dose. I want Jake and Mac to get it too because you can carry swine for 2 weeks before you even have symptoms! Scary to me!
